DPS Holy Priest Build Is Amazing

January 27, 2007 By Gitr 21 Comments

I found an article that really has my interest because of my newfound obsession with talent builds. Talent builds used to bore the crap out of me when I was a warrior. I didn’t want to go Protection because I wasn’t interested in competing with our GM for main tank duty. His gear was better and I wasn’t going to catch up any time soon. If it had STR, STA, or AGI, I wanted the piece. If the talent point said “damage” or “crit,” I wanted to spend the point.

Now that I am a priest, it seems like there are a lot more options, and even one that I had never considered before reading this article on a DPS Holy build. WoW Insider has been rocking my world recently with new in-game concepts that I was unaware of, despite my constant surfing. Maybe I should play more and surf less, but I do have a job. ๐Ÿ™‚

Several things would be different for me if I went to this build now. The biggest is my lack of level 60 gear. I’m guessing that with the stats he put up for his damage and crit rate, he’s got some end-game instance gear. I am 6 points away from having his level 62 build. Have any of you tried a Holy build with the intent being DPS rather than purely healing?

Here is that build if you didn’t click-through to read the article:

Discipline (14 points)5/5 Wand Specialization
3/5 Silent Resolve
2/2 Improved Power Word: Fortitude
1/1 Inner Focus
3/3 Meditation
Holy (32 points)

2/2 Healing Focus
3/3 Improved Renew
5/5 Holy Specialization
5/5 Divine Fury
1/1 Holy Nova
3/3 Inspiration
3/3 Improved Healing
2/2 Searing Light
1/1 Spirit of Redemption
5/5 Spiritual Guidance
2/2 Surge of Light

Shadow (7 points)

5/5 Spirit Tap
2/2 Improved Shadow Word: Pain

Hey there! Glad you liked my post. I’ve been really enjoying your blog as well.

Going into Outlands, the best gear I had was from MC and ZG. However, at this point, my soloing set has been completely replaced by Outlands stuff. So I wouldn’t worry too much about gear; good gear basically just falls in your lap as you’re leveling up. I’ve managed to collect both a healing set and a soloing set that far outshine MC/ZG items without even really trying. Do a few quests, run Blood Furnace and Underbog a couple times, and you’ll have what I have.

I respecced a little bit last night, by the way. I moved the points in Imp. PW:F to Silent Resolve (for PUG healing), and took
Holy Reach for more pulling distance. Holy Reach also helps if you use Psychic Scream instead of PW:S, since the mobs tend to run too far for a non-Holy Reach smite to reach them without you having to run around trying to follow.

These holy nukers/healers have existed since the priest talent overhaul around patch 1.10 if memory serves. If you insist on soloing to go to 70 and don’t want to do it shadow, then it’s ok, though dps and dpm is still not that of pure offensive casters. You really need to have a lot of +dmg gear to make it work, besides there’s no +holy dmg gear. Compared with the constant crits of a frost mage for instance you just don’t compete. Shadow on the other hand benefits from more itemization choices and doesn’t even need crits to perform.

I think it’s more efficient to group with a rogue if you’re disc/holy, or with a warlock if you’re shadow, and tear through the content. There are so many quests it’s more efficient than grinding solo.

Thanks for both of those remarks. I am fascinated by all the combinations of spells, damage, mana, and playstyles. I already have some decent dmg gear, but nothing remotely touching instance gear. My best stuff is my 3 Devout BoE pieces I bought. It will really be cool to totally skip MC stuff and replace it from simple quests in Outlands. Rockin’!

Jsut so you know so far in outlands I havn’t come across much gear that is fire resist that isnt craftable, after you and a few mates get your levels up a bit in outlands it may help to do a quick run through to get some nice fire resist gear, this will also help when against some bosses in the instances

    Thanks for reading, Oli.

I haven’t had much experience in any +resist gear to date because I never ran MC past Garr. Would you say Fire or Nature will be used more in BC instances?

As far as I know BC raid fights are less resist-based than old WoW. In doubt, always keep resist gear in the bank though.

It increases the length of time, so you get 2 more ticks of damage at whatever your damage is. I’m at 61 now, and it’s about 250 per tick. It’s more of a Boss fight or PvE talent.

I found a really nice dandelion on the AH around level 55-56 that was either +INT or +Healing, maybe it comes with both tags. It was pretty nice until I got a staff that replaced both.

I’m in the same boat again because my blue dagger rocks, but I’m just wasting stats not holding anything in my off-hand.
