Happiest Minimalistic UI in the World

January 29, 2007 By Gitr 11 Comments

I have finally found a UI that I love. The best part about it to me is that it’s my own creation, not a compilation. It has all the extra information that I crave, nothing is going to get in the way of clicking mobs in instances, and I keep guild/party/raid chat separate from system messages. The party portraits are set up to appear between the chat window and player/target portraits, making for VERY easy healing.

Everything you need is right there at the bottom of the screen where all of the action is happening, casting, spell buttons, the map, buffs/debuffs, and chat. It’s quite analogous to the dashboard in a car, which was my plan.

Edit: My biggest gripe about my system now is my framerate in WoW. It’s very poor: 9-12 fps in 1024×768 mode. I really have a hard time getting enough information on the screen at that resolution to boot, so that really makes me happy about this set-up, because everything is readable at 1024×768. I took this shot at 1600×1200, but nothing was going to kill me at the moment. 🙂

The only change I have made to this since the screenshot is that I made the buff area transparent instead of translucent, so it is less obtrusive when there aren’t any buffs filling the window. Here is the list of Addons:

UI-affecting:

  • Bongos
  • CT Core
  • CT BuffMod
  • CT MailMod
  • EnhTooltip
  • Informant
  • Titan Panel
  • vBagnon
  • VisualHeal
  • X-Perl

Great addons:

  • Auctioneer
  • Igor’s Mass Auction
  • EnhTooltip
  • Informant
  • Swatter

just a small question, all the spells on the right side, some are macros i bet? and others on the top bar are other hot keys (like you have to press ctrl f4 or somethin?) looks like playin a press is tough, hell even I dont use macros =/

I do like the style of your hp/mp bars and the mobs hp 🙂 would be awesome if you ran a list up on some of the mods you used!

    Thanks for commenting, Ex.

The spells are simply the action bars from the original UI, moved over using Bongos. I don’t use any macros because I’ve never toyed with the interface for that. They have bindings per Bongos, which makes it super, easy. The only off-beat keybinding I have is “f” for Fade. It’s a life-saver in instances.

I’ll put up the list after work, then.

If you are bored and have access now, a short list is:

Perl Classic, Bongos, vBagnon, VisualHeal (priest, druid, pally, etc.) Klik (non-UI affecting), and CT Core +adds. Can’t live without Auctioneer, either.

What did you do to get rid the default UI? (I assume if you install one of the UI mods it will auto remove the UI?)

Bongos clears out the old crap, and CT Mod gives you even more control after that.
Would a Bongos and CT Mod tutorial/walkthrough be helpful to you?
If you think that would be a good write-up, I’ll put some real effort into it.

I use CT Mod along with the default UI mod. I did look at the Bongos but just always thought it was just more add-on bars. So that’s why I didn’t bother to install it to see for myself. I personally like the UI since it’s clean. I’m thinking of updating mine similar to yours. I can probably figure it out after I install Bongos. If I have questions I’ll ask. It’s up to you if you want to put in the effort.
Also what resolution size you use for that UI?

Oh, good point on the resolution. See the Edit on the post. I forgot I wanted to brag about that.

Heh, I too use pearl classsic frames, ive tried vbagnon loved it, but always got this pesky pop up saying somethin about interface whenever i opend my bags and it would never close =/

For Pearl I do have one question (hope you know what im takin about heh):

When ever I send my pet to attack somethin, 2 small(movable) bars come up, one displaying my pets % health and the other the monsters % health, also, I get a separate movable bar of my own health and mp. Its ok, but the 2 smaller (movable) bars are annoying when Im in a group. Any clue how to fix that?

Those are target of target and pet settings under Perl’s configuration tabs. There are a lot of settings in there.

Make sure you only run the latest releases of everything. If you do, the popup won’t show up..that or get Swatter.

That’s the CT Buff Bar I see? I use Elk Buff Bar, but it’s getting old now. (5 December for crying out loud!) This CT version you’re running looks like an Ace addon.

Speaking of Ace, is that Titan Panel you’re using? I found Titan was a HUGE memory pig. I run even more panel add-ons, and have no noticeable memory hit, using FUBAR.
