Last night’s show was pretty good. There was some fantastic singing, good integration with the theme going along with Diana Ross being their mentor for the week, and the back and forth between Ryan and Simon during Melinda’s Q&A was priceless. For those of you who missed the exchange, it went down a road of Simon saying Ryan wears high heels, Ryan saying that Simon should stay out of his closet, Simon saying he’s waiting for Ryan to come out of it, and Ryan saying this has nothing to do with his shoes, but Melinda’s next song…segway complete. Each comment got more and more “OMG! Did he just say that on live TV?” Priceless.
Last night’s recap:
Brandon Rogers:
He was weak and forgot his words. The singing was fine, but the performance lacked.
Melinda Doolittle:
WOW!!! What a performer. She sang “Home” and brought the house down. Paula was crying and Melinda looked like she had just had the natural “in the zone” performance of a lifetime.
Chris Sligh:
No doubt this guy can sing. My woes about Sundance are officially over. Chris would have beaten him in the end. I didn’t recognize the song and thought it was terrific, but the judges said they didn’t like his remix of a classic. It didn’t bother me one big because I didn’t have anything to compare it to.
Gina Glocksen:
She sang “Love Child” and got a bit sqeaky in the high parts, and Simon said “it was forgettable.” To me, she didn’t do too hot, but she was still ahead of Brandon for the night.
Sanjaya Malakar:
I’m starting to sound like a broken record here. He sucks. The boy came out with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and never got louder than the instruments. He’s afraid to pull out the stops. He’s like a hotel bar singer. He got the best quotes of the night from the judges. Randy: “What’s going down, dawg?” and Simon: “I’ll say something positive. How old are you? [Sanjaya answers “17”]… You’re brave.”
Haley Scarnato:
She did pretty good, although she started quiet and came out in the end. She got her first compliment from Simon. Ever. If I remember correctly, she got to Hollywood on 2 votes, without Simon’s approval.
Phil Stacey:
I agree with everything Randy said: “Boring, but great vocals.” Although, I’ve noticed that he doesn’t have a low range at all. I am sure LaKisha can sing lower.
LaKisha Jones:
She sang “God Bless The Child” after never having heard the songs or read the lyrics before. I went, “Uh oh. She’s going to forget the words.” Man, she didn’t, and she got right on up there with Melinda. Fantasic.
Blake Lewis:
He updated “You Keep Me Hanging On” in a very cool way, but the judges told him to not mess with a classic. I thought it was really great.
Stephanie Edwards:
What I noted about her performance was that her vocals were dead on, but her song didn’t connect with me, or really even with her. It was just a song.
Chris Richardson:
To quote myself, “Ugh! Dawg!” Paula liked him, proving she is on crack or something. If she was at home, I’d swear she had the volume down. Simon was spot-on and called it “dreadful.”
Jordin Sparks:
She came out and laid it all out on the line. The best part is that she “Made it a three-girl race,” according to Randy. I agree.
There is your recap, and now for the toughest part. I’d really like to see Sanjaya go because he didn’t bring it. There was no yo, no volume, and no desire. But the 15-year-old girls will still vote for him. Brandon immediately started at the bottom by forgetting the words, but I think Chris Richardson’s performance was far worse and will get the boot.
Final answer: Chris Richardson.
Great recap of a fairly good show mate.
When the show started I thought for sure the producers read this blog. Throwing Brandon out first (early positions always the hardest as they really need to stand out to be remembered above 11 others), forgot the words in another fairly dreary performance and then the wolves (judges) ate him up. All ingredients for him to exit stage left. While he wasn’t the only one to forget the words at least the judges cut the others some slack, to me it was like they were priming Brandon to be first gone out of the 12.
Melinda and Lakisha stood out as usual, “different league” very appropriate when it comes to these 2 and the other 10 contestants.
Personally I didn’t like Chris Sligh’s performance last night, maybe the new image thing played a part too, but then again Blake didn’t impress me last night either and I’m a fan. I give em props for tryin to change up the songs I just don’t think they pulled it off completely, they only have
dang I wrote too much, got cut off/censored :p
****less than a week to put it together, maybe with more time?? It’s funny to me the judges and their feedback each week. Sure they need to say “something” but it’s almost like they get buzzwords or buzzfeedback and just roll with it. Last few weeks it was “not original enough” or “you didn’t make it your own”, now that we’re in the top 12 and some of them are trying to do just that they put on their flipflop hats and come out with “Dawg, a classic is a classic”.
I told my wife this last night during Senjaya when she made her usual “I hope he gets voted off this week” comment, that I think he’s got a couple more weeks left in him. It keeps the water coolers talking about Idol, his teenage girl fans should still have numbers when compared to 11 others but once the field gets slimmed and his performances continue to be dismal that ratio will drop him down. It’s funny you wrote that he never got louder than the instruments, personally I was thinking he was singing on par with the backup vocals and at times they were even louder than him, lol.
I thought Gina did well, Haley got the sympathy card so she should be around, Phil I still can’t get over the mental anguish he put me through last week but should be safe, Jordin did beautifully not over singing a campy song but keeping it campy and sounded good. Stephanie has dropped off the radar, it was only a couple of weeks ago where Simon was lumping her in there with Lakisha and Melinda but she’s a middle of the road kinda gal, she’ll stick around for a while simply because there’s others worse than her.
Christimber Richardsonlaketryhard, I’ve been hopin gets the boot for weeks, I don’t think this will be it though, he had more things going for him than Brandon and his fan base will likely give him another week or two to hang himself. I’m goin in agreement with yesterday’s prediction, all signs point towards Brandonless Idol next week.
Finally! A comment…phew. I thought the blog broke. ๐
Try listening to Sligh’s song again. I know the glasses thing was freaking me out, too, but just listen.
Simon’s “if you heard it on the radio” comments ring pretty true about 80% of the time.
I agree that Stephanie is now a middle of the road gal. She needs to belt a good song that fits her, get the outfit, and be flawless to get back in the race.
::shakes holy water on this thread::
I would have commented…though it would have been similar to Tomas’ remark. SO since he went first i will follow:
” I need an old priest and a new priest….The power of Christ compels you…the power of Christ compels you.”
Admit it, Mind. You read the whole thing…and you want to watch it tonight.
I will forgive your insult…..this time. Let no further statements merit closer examinations of my mercies.
“I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”
Though seriously..if I wanted to hear bad singing I would record myself…..good singing.. well they have these things called CDs and MP3s. They kinda have some good stuff out.
Invoking the spirit of Darth here?!! K. Cool. ๐
