It is so easy to overlook or underappreciate those things which come easily to us. I am a textbook case of that. This is a tad long for making my point, and I’m not out to bang my drum, but here is what you can do when you pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
I finally got back to getting back to college. I received my A.A. degree in 2005 after taking my sweet time (8 years) to get 61 credits. Now that I’m settled and have the best sidekick at home a person could ask for, I’m going back to finish my Bachelor’s degree.
I am going back to my original institutional love for school by re-applying to the University of South Florida in Tampa. I was originally accepted in 1997 into the Honors program and that went…well…badly. I wasn’t focused. I didn’t have the drive. I didn’t appreciate my full-ride tuition-free scholarship and I tanked. Hard.
After hitting the working world for several years, I hit the community college (actually one of the largest in the country) and got nearly straight A’s again and finished up with a 2.9 GPA. I have two or three courses to re-attempt for grade forgiveness to assist my GPA, as well.
I plan on attending one summer course as soon as they process my application, and classes start in May. I just checked the academic calendar, and my course is once per week for 3 1/2 hours for five meetings! To make matters worse, it’s a writing course. I can’t imagine how much reading and writing I’ll have to do to get my work done, but I’ll “gitr done.”
You and I seem to run in parallel lines. I’m going to be going back to school at the end of the year to finish up my bachlors. I got my AA in 2001, I’ve taking a long time off.
And I live in Hollywood Florida. Not too far from Tampa 🙂
As the great Stacey London says: “SHUT UP!” Yay for Flori-duh! It’s raining cats and dogs over here today.
Gratz again Gitr! Good to hear. I’ve been dreaming of going back to school for the past few years after a similar story to yours but instead have squandered my life in the corporate environment 🙁 Or as I’ve recently started saying “wasting away in Margaritaville”. Now’s a great time to get your organizational skills in order as you’ll have some juggling to do it sounds like (blog, school etc). I hope you take advantage of your opportunities, we’re pulling for ya and know you’ll succeed and do the best ya can.
I’m on the phone right now because I applied late for USF. The community college operates on a dfferent calendar. We’ll see if I get in for Summer or if I have to wait until Fall.
Good luck getting in hopefully you make the cut-off
