We’ve all seen the ads on the blogs and WoW-related sites: “Power-level your toon for $XXX 1-70 guaranteed!” How many of us have done it? /pause… I have read that it is against the EULA, but I’m not so sure it should be. While I don’t condone it, I don’t really have a problem with it.
If sites such as The Unknown Gamer level you as a brand new account or a brand new toon, I don’t see any reason why someone should be penalized. It is a game, and games are meant to be played. Here is where I got to doing “Deep Thought” (5g to the first person on BL to name that reference) on the subject of power-leveling.
Bottom line: I think it is stupid.
Counterpoint: I can see why some people would want to use it. Really.
What comes to mind right off the bat is that if I’m going to drop $40 on a game, I’m going to play it. Every minute of it. And I’m not going to pay someone else to play it for me. There are a lot of disadvantages to getting into WoW and starting as a level 60, or now 70 character, especially if this is your first go at WoW.
WoW has an incredibly complex set of world rules, just as we have the laws of physics. Crits are based some things, aggro is based on others, Agility affects players different ways, etc. The list goes on for pages. If you are a first-time player of this is your first toon with a new class, you are really robbing yourself of valuable gameplay experience by entering the world fully decked out. Chances are you are going to suck, and suck hard. Groups will hate your guts and call you a noob. Duh! You are!
On the other hand, given the money, I would totally want to have another warrior, one on BL, because I love the class. There is no way that I want to start a warrior all over again on this server. Leveling from 50-58 is disgustingly hard and I want nothing of it. I’ve got a level 60 warrior, I’ve played him over 25 days of /played time, and I know the class in every aspect of the game. Why should I bother with…all of the bother…of leveling just because I’m on a new realm? A transfer is out of the question because of faction issues on a PvP realm, so I’m stuck.
What do you say? Is it worth the risk of Blizz suspending or cancelling your account, and in which situations is it worth the risk?
Post sponsored by BNR Corp. I find this topic fascinating, but BNR prompted me to get off my butt and write a post. They agreed that this format was fine: pros and cons of power-leveling services. BNR is an American company.
Nope, seriously not interested. First, it’s a game. Meant to be played. Secondly, how do I get good at the character and his abilities if I don’t play him? I just started a warrior to get to know the class. I wouldn’t have a clue how to play him if he was power levelled or if I bought him on ebay – what is the point? The first mob I come accross I would get smoked. And that isn’t fun for anyone.
Does the same go if you can’t transfer your toon to a new realm, but don’t want to bother leveling again? That is the ONLY circumstance I would even think about paying for that. If I started new toons on a new server with others, I’m going to level with them, not with a service. That’s for sure.
Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy
“It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”
No to powerleveing….end of rant.
I understand people who use it… some people just want to start cracking with a level 60/70 character of a new class and not spend X days doing the level-up procedure. Me I am an alt-o-holic so I don’t mind. Several of my friends would rather pay $300 and have a new end-game ready toon four weeks later. It depends on where the player is in his IRL life…
I agree with your “one and only” reason for powerleveling. I’d want to do it too in that circumstance. It definitely sucks leveling a class you’ve already leveled, as much as you enjoy the class. I’ve said before that I wish there were a 1-60 instant level button, but alas.
How many folks rushed to 70 only to be bored now? Any? Any?
Sure they did. They just HAD TO BE 70 and now they’re bored. “Is that all there is???” Yep. There’s that whole inbetween part, you know, those years between birth and maturity, that you raced right over. Grats! Woot! YOU WON! YAY! You went from birth to working a job in 4 days, and what a hateful 4 days it was. (Now stop complaining.)
I absolutely love the game. And I don’t have one 70 yet. So why on earth would I pay someone else to rush me to the end?
Hex,
I’d like to have a new level 60 warrior and be done with that. What are your friends’ numbers? LOL.
Todin,
Insert button would be awesome. Kinda like the Easy button I have on my desk. If only…
Kinless,
Whoooo. I pushed a button there, and I don’t think it was the Easy button. I completely agree with the “love of the game” feeling. I’ll bet my ex-roomie is completely bored now that he’s got his toon to 70 (a target=”_blank” href=”http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/#character-sheet.xml?r=Kargath&n=Intoxication”>Intoxication. I’m suprised his mage isn’t past 60 yet, but maybe he’s grinding away at rep.
Makes no difference to me if some people settle for mediocrity.
“It depends on where the player is in his IRL lifeโฆ”
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!
Let’s see. $300 to have a character leveled, quested, geared for me… (2 days of work… after taxes) while I play my current level 70 on high end raids… or blow 2 months (or more because I *hate* playing solo) to level on my own, taking time away from playing my current end gamer. And, all but completely wiping out my social life.
Yeah, hard decision to make.
