I had my annual review today. I have 2 things to say about that:
- I really like the evaluation I was given and hope a good increase comes from it. I’d say more, but they might be watching. /glance side to side /look over shoulder
- I had to make a deal to stop blogging at work. It kind of sounded like I could either blog or keep my job. I choose my job.
I will be allowed to stay on Gmail all day long and I have chat available. I can keep my Yahoo! Launchcast radio going. I can download WoW podcasts using my Netvibes. I can even respond to posts and such during lunch. Alas, my days of posting 4 times per day are over, but I’m not going anywhere. There will still be daily posts, I just won’t be able to respond to moderated comments as soon or reply to questions in comments until lunch or when I go home.
I think that in the end that is a small price to pay.
What you have to work at work and not blog? =)
I think it is good to separate work from leisure. You’ll end up accomplishing more at work and if you’re controlling your own hours also realise that you don’t have to work long hours.
Yeah…i’m in the navy and we use government computers that wont allow us to do a whole lot..i’m lucky to even get on blogs such as these now n’ days…too many proxies, firewalls, etc….it’s horrible…i haven’t been able to get on the WOW site at work this week…had no problem before….it sucks…most of my web time is spent at home as well…which sucks when you have to share with a woman..ugh..thank god she works nights lol…
Thats balls. Not blogging at work…..meh communists. They all need to be…..slimed. Yeah some sticky green slime on thier heads…good deal.
I’m lucky that here botus they regulate and track only the really bad stuff. Since most here are computer techies they know how to get around the things that make the interweb a crawl. The tracking systems used seem to go for the really dangerous stuff, stuff that should not be messed with at the work place. I also think our trackers are more interested in finding thier own ways past the firewals and proxies to police the rest of us.
@ Hex, it is mainly that it takes a LOT of work to keep me at 100% doing editing only, so instead of firing a temp or two for when the real avalanche comes, I take breaks to keep my mind sharp. I’m on lunch now, typing as fast as I can and getting to all of my sites.
@ Loss, yay for “geek time.” Luckily, my wife has a hard time falling asleep at the same time as me, but can’t sleep without me, so I get 1-2 hours solid every night. The problem is that I want to play WoW instead of blog or do searches.
@ Mind, I had the same thing at the engineering company I worked at. As long as you didn’t do triple-x sites or download screensavers with viruses, you were okay. The problem there was that I was expected to be outside in the lab instead of in my office.
Keeping the job is probably a good thing. Pays for your WoW time. Plus this will actually give me a chance to keep up with your postings.
It will be rough seeing your time cut down as I can’t get to much WoW related stuff at my job and I’ve been reduced to reading blogs. You’re site is maybe one of 3 that I visit daily. I hope that it doesn’t get blocked as well as I think everyone need a little downtime.
Me – I say it’s crap – the smokers at every place I’ve ever worked have copped more free time with their hourly smokathons than *any* blogger I’ve ever met. Same can be said of fantasy football/baseball/basketball leagues – etc.
You’ve got the right attitude about it all – but in my opinion as a supervisor – if you’re getting the work done and making forward progress – then no worries. If you’re missing deadlines and turning in sub-par work…okay – time to adjust fire.
Otherwise…slime them….
Congratulations on a good review, but your rather quick responses will be missed. I am rather lucky, even though most sites are blocked, that I get to at least leave comments.
I will definitely be on this weekend, three day weekends kick arse. I have been really busy at home also I have been trying to find a Xbox 360 Elite to no avail and at work Lance is gone and I have to deal with someone that Iโm not in sync with. I just need to veg for awhile and try to play catch up. ๐
Did Lance go bye-bye or is he just away? Gratz on the 3-day weekend. I’m going to go in on Saturday for extra hours and still get a 2-day for a change.
He is in Airman Leadership School, it supposed to teach you how to be a proper leader and customs and courtesies. Basically I considered it a lot of pomp and circumstance; itโs really just a management class that lasts 6 weeks. He will turn back into a Vampire sometime in mid June. The sun burns the eyes. ๐
