Key Fragment #1: Check

January 18, 2008 By Gitr 17 Comments

Last night, I was joined by my fellow warrior guildie, Alaron, for a PuG through SL for Gitr’s first key fragment. It was an unusually quiet night for the guild with only 4-5 of us on all evening, so I was thankful to have one comrade.

He was leader and explained the fights I had not experienced yet quite accurately and successfully. We didn’t wipe until our first attempts on each of the last two bosses, but alas, no tanking loot dropped.

I was neglegent in e-mailing myself the screenshots this morning because I simply fell asleep at my desk after I got out of the shower and my wife had to wake me up to go to work. Maybe staying up until 1:30 in SL had something to do with it…

We had a very durable group, which made it much nicer than constantly rezzing the squishies. We had Gitr at MT, Alaron as dps, a ret shammy, a holy pally, and a hunter of unknown spec. My final screenshot showed me taking 38% of the damage, if my memory serves me correctly. I was at 50% until the wipes began. I was dead for nearly the entire last fight when the Sonic Boom and The Bomb were in the same area and I had no idea what to do about that.

What last night did was really instill the confidence to tank for a raid that my recent (and historical for that matter) experiences with PuGs weren’t feeding me. When the group pays attention and has a vested interest in getting to the very end, it’s amazing how much better a run goes. I almost can’t remember the feeling of raiding with 39 others for a common purpose, but I’m halfway to experiencing Kara, which sounds like it’s totally PuGgable on Silvermoon at this point.

I’ve seen several guildies in Kara on non-raid nights, so what are the odds of getting in on a LFG request for Kara as a MT/OT? I’ve been included on the Team 2 Kara raid for Friday nights, so we’ll see if I get to play next Friday.

You’re gonna wanna get some better gear before you try tanking in kara…

    Run some heroics!

There’s a really nice tanking sword that drops from the last boss in heroic Mech (The Sun Eater) He also drops some awesome plate dps legs!!!

At least try to get the full “bold” tanking plate set.

Thanks. I started reading the Bosskillers guides to the bosses. I have the gear (minus about 60 defense) to tank the first boss. I’ll be OT for the most part…

Do I need to respec myself and gimp my tanking ability when I’m called upon to tank, or should I stay prot and just not do as much damage, but be very durable? Surely an OT should be prot, right?

Well as a ret pala i’ve off tanked, and as a Balance druid i’ve off tanked in Kara as well. I’m just a gear whore!

Firelight has 4 sets of armour in his bags, gwindle has 3!

One for each spec (firelight has a spell damage set as well for aoe tanking lowbie instances)

Its key that you try to get uncrashable. There are loads of sites out there that will tell you what you need to get in order to become uncrushable.

There’s also an addon you can get that can tell you this as well.

I’ll try to find out what its called later on and post it.

I’m at 430-460, depending on my gear equipped. Go ahead and look at my armory profile. Gitr on Silvermoon.

I have the full Felsteel set now, so I have several gem slots to fill. When I get enough money to justify putting off my flying mount a day or two, I’ll split them between blue STA and blue DEF gems. I might buy a new helm and get straight DEF gems for that and use my current helm for DPS.

Personally i’d get my mount first before doing anything else….Why?

Tempest Keep instances need a flying mount to get to!

And there’s some really nice gear in those instances!!!

Another thing you can do is find a group than can clear Kara in a night!

Tag along as DPS and soak up the gear! The Voilet Eye Ring you get for tanks is really nice!

Also there’s some really nice tanking upgrades to be had from getting your rep up in instances from the Quartermasters!
    (and head enchants of course)

I think warriors need 490 defence.

Oh and i cant look at the armory at work, so i’ll look later!!

Yes, 490 is the magic number. So, you’re suggesting respeccing unless I’ll be a MT for Kara?

I’m getting put on Team 2 as OT, but I don’t want to limit my options for PuGing when people LFG for a tank. I’m not new to raiding, but I’ve never MT’d a raid because my old guild’s MT was the GM… nothing I could do about that situation, so I don’t know how important my spec is going to be for anything higher than BF.

I did a dang nice job of MT’ing SL until the last boss because of mechanics and bad luck. I hear Prince wipes ppl all the time because of the infernals.

If you’ve got good DPS Gear then when not respec!

But make sure you’re in a group that know what they’re doing, and can clear the place in an evening. (thats the progression level we’re at due to nearly all of our raid-members having cleared 5/6 in SSC, and 3/4 in TK: Eye.

    So we’re overgeared for kara.
