A New Blizzard MMO

January 26, 2007 By Gitr 12 Comments

Empire magazine interviewed Blizzard’s Vice President of Development, Itzik Ben Bassat, and got some juicy information for all of us drooling, game-thirsty geeks. Read the interview here: Empire Interview

Now that you’re back, or still here if you’ve already read it, I want to speculate. I saw the interview in RSS, and then had the benefit of seeing some links on other blogs today. I have a slightly different take on this. Does Blizzard have the kahones to break out with something completely new at this point?

To bust out with a Starcraft MMO game is not really fitting in with the claim of bringing “entertainment to another level.” Another level is something that hasn’t happened since MMOs went to graphics. To go from Ultima Online’s old 2D engine to what we play today is not as big of a jump as the leap from text to graphics.

You Have a Friend in Us

January 26, 2007 By Gitr 3 Comments

I noticed during my wait outside my local Best Buy when buying the expansion, that World of Warcraft is a community. Wikipedia describes community as

a group of people who interact and share certain things as a group

I walked right into the middle of a community, and kind of joined them. Kind of, as in they were weird. They all looked like they were taken from the same set of mold pieces. Here are the requirements for WoW, according to that group:

  • black hair
  • chalk-white skin
  • bags under your eyes
  • overweight
  • nothing better to do on a Tuesday than stand at Best Buy and go back home

I didn’t really fit in with that group at all. I am the opposite of all of those points, including going to work before 7am and going right back to work for a full day before going home. But I was allowed to stand and listen, because they knew I was one of them.

World Servers Randomly Down Last Night

January 26, 2007 By Gitr 2 Comments

I had a heck of a time getting anything done last night because of the world servers going up and down like yo-yos. I tried logging in to Deadr, thinking maybe maybe maybe I could level him out if sleep didn’t overcome me. I logged in fine, but after the loading screen, it said the world server was down. I tried 2 more times to no avail.

Time for Gitr to get some playtime, then. I got on him just fine. I went to the east first to kill some orcs to get a Cursed Talisman for Ill Omens [58]. That was fine and all, until I aggroed to many after I already had the drop. I corpse-rezzed and turned it in. The next quest, Cursed Talismans [58], looked like I needed to kill a lot of those guys to get the drops I needed. I really need to level some before I start into like-level mobs. My gear really, really sucks. I suppose I could go finish some old-world stuff for XP to get another level under my belt.

January 25, 2007 By Gitr 16 Comments

I am estatic! I was poking around my Google webmaster panels and saw a couple of coveted #1 spots based on certain search terms, but no search term beats what I saw today. Thanks to all of you for making this possible.

Blog Post Titles Make all the Difference in Newsreaders

January 25, 2007 By Gitr 12 Comments

How do you get your subscription reading rate up and keep it up? There are a lot of factors involved, and a lot of various methods for getting the word out about your blog, but this is quick and easy and greatly impacted my subscription rate within a week.

  • I created a sitemap using the WordPress sitemap plugin. This baby worked like a charm. Google Sitemap Generator for WordPress v2 Final
  • I went back over my query results of last week and put those words into my keywords list in the header.
  • I started using more terms and keywords in my posts that I know people are interested in at the moment. If they come to the site through a search and like the site, they have a chance of subscribing.
  • I started up like crazy on MyBlogLog for some community.

Deadr’s New Spec: Discipline

January 25, 2007 By Gitr 3 Comments

I know, I know…before you all have a cow that I’m not a Shadow priest anymore, hold off on that for a bit. With all due respect to Vorenis and the other priests that say I should stay Shadow until I max out my leveling or become a healbot, I want to make my reasoning clear.

I cannot find anywhere actuall numbers or examples of what someone can do specced one way or another when it comes to everyday playing. I have found some good resources of examples for doing damage and healing for Holy vs. Shadow specs, but never Discipline. Add to that, I don’t really care how much one spell or one heal will do. It’s gameplay that matters to me. What will get me to my end goal fastest or safest?
