Starcraft 2 Finally Announced

May 22, 2007 By Gitr Leave a Comment

I went to [tag]World of Warcraft[/tag]’s home page this morning to see about [tag]Patch 2.1.0[/tag] coming out, and was presented with this screen and link about [tag]Starcraft 2[/tag] coming out.

I am for sure going to buy the game. How about you?

Here are some goodies from the FAQ on the site:

When is the game coming out?
At this point, it’s too early to provide an initial estimate on the release date. As with all Blizzard games, we will take as much time as needed to ensure the game is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible.
How will StarCraft II be different from StarCraft?
StarCraft II will run on a vibrant new 3D-graphics engine that will be capable of rendering beautiful landscapes as well as massive individual units and army sizes. We’re also introducing a number of distinct new units to the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg, and even some of the familiar units that return in StarCraft II will have new tricks up their sleeves, which will give the game its own unique flavor.

In addition, Battle.net will be overhauled with some new and exciting features to enhance online play and competition, while the story-mode campaign will also offer some unique aspects for players who enjoy single-player content. We’ll have more details on all these aspects in the months to come.

Will there be both single-player and multiplayer components?
Yes, StarCraft II will include a unique story-mode campaign, as well as multiplayer capability over Battle.net. We’ll provide more detail on both of these aspects a little further along in the development process.

Altism Must Be Related to ADD

April 27, 2007 By Gitr 10 Comments

I don’t have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and I never have. I’ve never been on medication for my attentiveness, yet I find myself participating in something that looks like the biggest case of ADD in history. I have approximately 20 toons over level 15, scattered on various realms and play-types. I am really beginning to appreciate Kinless’ definition of Altism on his blog:

Altism, defined.

Main Entry: alt·ism
Pronunciation: \alt,i-zem\
Function: noun
Date: 2007

: a variable gaming condition that appears by character number five and is characterized by impairment of the ability to reach higher levels, an impairment in joining end-game content, failure to maintain normal levels of reputation and faction gain, and by an inability to be forced into stereotyped playing patterns. < “Dude, l2lvl.” “Can’t. I’ve got altism.”>

5 Ways to Keep Having Fun Playing WoW

April 24, 2007 By Gitr Leave a Comment

Now that a lot of people are level 70 already, and they are in the grind for rep and for consumables for Kara, I thought it would be a good time to remind people that WoW is for fun. There are several things that I find very exciting about WoW, and when I’m bored I long for those things. I’m back in the “fun saddle” again and doing all of those things again.

  1. [tag]Leveling[/tag] – Nothing is as fun to me as hitting another level and seeing that big yellow column blast up around me and replenish my HP and Mana.
  2. [tag]Questing[/tag] – I enjoy seeing the ? above a head. I can’t explain it. It’s just cool. Plus it’s fun to get new stuff from it that you can’t get otherwise.
  3. Killing tough [tag]Elites[/tag] – I like marking my skill as I progress in my months and years of playing to see what level I can take down Elites. [tag]Hogger[/tag] anyone? I look up on my blog archives what level I took them down with my old toons and see if I one-upped myself.
  4. Leveling a [new] [tag]profession[/tag] – I love getting to 300 in a profession (and 375 in FA) and making the best stuff. New professions are fun ways to keep things fresh, especially if you have gold to burn.
  5. Like #1, [tag]Powerleveling[/tag] – I’ve been there, done that with the classes I know I can play. Now I want to see how fast I can do them. I try to do it without groups, and especially a high-level helper. Huntr has only been in one group: to kill [tag]Kel’Gash[/tag] in Ghostlands.

What Do You Think About Power-Leveling?

April 14, 2007 By Gitr 12 Comments

We’ve all seen the ads on the blogs and WoW-related sites: “Power-level your toon for $XXX 1-70 guaranteed!” How many of us have done it? /pause… I have read that it is against the EULA, but I’m not so sure it should be. While I don’t condone it, I don’t really have a problem with it.

If sites such as The Unknown Gamer level you as a brand new account or a brand new toon, I don’t see any reason why someone should be penalized. It is a game, and games are meant to be played. Here is where I got to doing “Deep Thought” (5g to the first person on BL to name that reference) on the subject of power-leveling.

Bottom line: I think it is stupid.

Counterpoint: I can see why some people would want to use it. Really.

WoW Toons are Glorified Tamagotchi

April 6, 2007 By Gitr 5 Comments

I was discussing games with a co-worker yesterday and was mildly disappointed that he doesn’t play the best game ever, but…I overlooked that point in the interest of the conversation. His love is Grand Theft Auto, and he plays it a LOT.

I really don’t have any experience playing it, although I got a GTA 3-pack from Best Buy about 2 years ago to play on my laptop because of its limited gaming ability. I think he’s a few releases down the road from me, but at least I know what he is talking about.

What got him about the latest version was the constant need to take care of his guy. There was food, and clothes, and sleep, and all kinds of stuff that he said belongs in The Sims, not in a car-jacking game. [Read more…] about WoW Toons are Glorified Tamagotchi

Going Dual-screen

March 5, 2007 By Gitr 26 Comments

I hooked up my second monitor yesterday after my wife went to bed to test out playing with 2 monitors and putting the non-essential info on the side monitor. I like it! I like it a LOT! Next up is a serious upgrade, because my framerate took a big hit (about half) in the name of a clear playing area.

Warning, this full-size image is 250k if you’re on dial-up.
